This lecture course will provide students with an introduction to Australian literature from the early colonial period to the present day. Given the dispossession of Indigenous Australians that began with the landing of James Cook's Endeavour in 1770 and the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, special consideration will be given to literature by Indigenous Australian authors, including oral traditions and literary works across genres.
A number of excerpts from longer texts will be made available to students via a Moodle course. All participants have access to the AustLit database via our university library website. Further context is provided by the Digital Australian Studies Lab (DAS Lab), an innovative e-learning course created some years ago with the help of UDE competitive funding that enables students to familiarise with Australian history and culture (currently under construction due to technical issues).
