This course provides an introduction to nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs). Our prototype model will be the Navier–Stokes equations, which we will describe in detail while developing the functional-analytic techniques needed to study them. We will examine how to construct solutions, identify conditions under which such solutions exist globally in time, and discuss various regularisation mechanisms. In particular, we will look at how smooth solutions can be obtained from smooth initial data as well as from rougher data.
Prerequisites: A course in Analysis, PDE or Functional Analysis.
