This seminar examines China's changing role in international politics and the implications of its growing political, economic and strategic power for the international order. Particular attention is given to the development of Chinese foreign and security policy, relations with the United States and the European Union, regional politics in Asia, and China's engagement with the Global South and institutions of global governance.

The seminar approaches these developments through central political-science debates concerning power, interests, legitimacy, nationalism, identity and status. Students will engage with competing explanations of Chinese international behaviour and examine how domestic political developments interact with changes in China's external environment. Across the seminar, particular attention will be paid to questions of continuity and change and to the extent to which China is adapting to, contesting or contributing to the transformation of existing international order.
