This lecture is the first of two lectures in module LING1. It offers an introduction to the study of language. After introducing some general definitions, basic properties of language and established approaches, the lecture discusses the different levels of language with a focus on English. It starts out from a description of its sounds (phonetics, phonology), then moves on to the structure of words (morphology) and larger units like clauses and sentences (syntax), and finally looks at meaning in general (semantics) and how meaning is established in actual conversation (pragmatics).
Note that the lecture is only one part of this course. It is complemented by our linguistics tutorials (‘Übungen’). Students taking the lecture should also be in one of the tutorial groups. The second lecture, the “Introduction to Linguistics II”, will follow in summer term.
