This course is intended to hone students' writing skills and take them beyond the level of Comprehensive Language Course II. Here we will work on refining the essay by looking at structure, formulation and register more closely.

The aim of this course is to give students the opportunity to improve their oral comprehension and presentation skills and expand their vocabulary and expression using a variety of documentaries, podcasts and audio files.

What is American Studies? How can we define the discipline? What are the questions that animate our field? This course will help you to frame tentative answers for these questions. It provides an overview of some of the most important and influential (a) areas of American Studies (e.g. early America, Enlightenment, industrialization, globalization); (b) approaches to the field of U.S. American literature, culture and media (e.g. New Criticism, Myth and Symbol School, ideology critique, new historicism, transnationalism); (c) methods and theories employed in the study of North American literary and cultural production (e.g. theorizing on race, class and gender; concepts of (inter)mediality; (sub)urban studies).

 A sequence of collaborative online international learning with students and instructors from the University Rovira i Virgili from Tarragona, Spain, will enable you to negotiate and apply your newly won understanding of some of the key concepts in American studies.

A reader with the relevant material will be provided. Requirements for successful completion of the course: active participation in the collaborative online international learning exercise and the classroom debate, submission of short assignments, oral exam at the end of the term.

This class will allow students to improve their Reading and Oral Communication competences.

The coloniality of power and knowledge continues to shape our society and the perceptions and actions of individuals who have grown up in this society. School as an institution of such socialization processes, including its actors such as teachers, is not an exception. Rather, as a part of society, schools are also prone to contributing to a reproduction of these power structures and knowledge archives on several levels. ELT is one of such levels as its core concepts and contents are likely to reproduce the coloniality of power and knowledge. Thus, English language educators are required to critically engage with teaching approaches, contents, and materials that empower them to decolonize their classrooms. Against this background, the following questions will be discussed in the seminar: (1) What does it mean to decolonize the classroom? (2) How can English language educators design a counter-hegemonic (machtkritischen) and anti-racist classroom? (3) What challenges do they encounter? (4) How do the objectives of counter-hegemonic and anti-racist education impact on principles and methods of ELT?

Students participating in this seminar are expected to take an oral exam after completing the module FD 2 (oral exam in combination with the second seminar of this module).

Main objectives of the lecture

The students should learn how to successfully work on an analytical problem: From sampling and sample preparation to analysis and data evaluation. 

They will learn new analytical techniques such as comprehensive two-dimensional chromatography, ion mobility mass spectrometry, ambient desorption ion sources etc.

• DNA adduct analysis
• DNA methylation
• Analysis of active substances in Chinese herbal medicine or other natural products
• Use of APLI for non-aromatic compounds
• Analysis of surfactants in cleaners
• Analysis of Phloem sap
• Quantitative analysis with MALDI
• Analysis of liquid inclusions in quartz samples
• Analysis of isobaric compounds with MS

In this course, students apply panel time series methods to address empirical questions in international economics.

Der Arbeitsmarkt ist in modernen Gesellschaften ein wesentlicher Mechanismus, mit dem soziale Ungleichheiten entstehen und reproduziert werden. Durch Arbeit und die Organisation von Arbeit werden soziale Beziehungen, Lebenschancen und Machtverhältnisse geformt. Durch Globalisierung, Migration und Wege der Integration von Zuwanderten auf Arbeitsmärkten verändern sich auch Formen und Erscheinungen sozialer Ungleichheit, und umgekehrt: durch Migration verändern sich auch Arbeitsmärkte.

In diesem Kurs werden klassische Texte der Arbeitsmarktforschung gelesen und kritisch diskutiert. In diesen Texten wird deutlich, dass in der Arbeitsmarktforschung jeweils unterschiedliche Aspekte von Arbeitsmärkten in den Vordergrund gerückt werden können. Hierzu gehören u.a. Machtverhältnisse auf Arbeitsmärkten, Ursachen beruflicher Ungleichheit, Diskriminierung auf Arbeitsmärkten, normative Kriterien guter Arbeit, sowie Institutionen, die den Erwerbsverlauf strukturieren. Die Texte sind sowohl in deutscher als auch in englischer Sprache.

Die Studierenden sollen zu selbst gewählten Veranstaltungen Zusammenfassungen der Texte vorlegen. Zudem sollen sie zu selbst gewählten Veranstaltungen Bezüge zwischen den Konzepten der Arbeitsmarktsoziologie und Fragen von Migration und Integration sammeln und vortragen.
