The module consists of two parts: Energy Economics and Sector Coupling, which build on each other.

The Energy Economics part serves as the link between the technical and economic aspects of energy supply and distribution. In addition to the fundamental economic principles required for calculating the costs of different energy conversion methods and energy transmission, concrete investment calculations based on relevant examples are also covered. Besides fundamental energy conversion concepts, methods for optimizing the deployment of energy generation and utilization are introduced.

The Sector Coupling part builds on the Energy Economics lecture. Only through sector coupling can an effective and successful energy transition be achieved. The integration of different sectors enables a complete supply with renewable energy sources. Therefore, the focus of this module is on technologies for the decarbonization and flexibilization of the electricity sector, while also addressing the transport, heating, and industrial/chemical sectors. This approach facilitates the transition of primary energy supply from fossil to renewable energy sources.

Building on the in-depth understanding of energy economics, this lecture segment provides an overview of the technical and economic challenges. A particular emphasis is placed on current developments in the field of Power-to-X.
